It is always important to keep a clean house. It is even more important now, to keep your surfaces in your home disinfected. When you do this, you will reduce the chances of spreading germs, including viruses. You’ll want to do everything in your power to rid your home of germs that could make you and your family ill.
By taking precautions in your home, and being diligent about keeping a clean home, you can drastically reduce your likelihood of getting sick. The question is – where do you begin? We have put together a few tips to get you started.
Use the Right Supplies
Having the right supplies is crucial when cleaning your home. You may already have everything that you need, but there are a few more things you should consider.
Disinfectants v. Cleaners
There are differences between household cleaners and disinfectants. When used properly, many household cleaning sprays and wipes will kill germs. However, you should use a true disinfectant for the best results. A disinfecting spray or wipe will be the most effective at killing bacteria that carry major viruses (think Coronavirus / COVID-19) and illnesses. Read the labeling on your cleaning products to make sure your sprays, wipes, and other cleaners are truly disinfectants.
Paper Towels v. Sponges
To clean their homes, most people use sponges, microfibers cloths, and other reusable materials. It’s important to understand that these products should still be cleaned and/or swapped out from time to time. Otherwise, they will begin to harbor bacteria themselves and spread it throughout your home.
Consider using disposable products when doing a deep cleaning of your home to minimize cross-contamination.
How to Use Disinfectants
Always follow the directions on the package to ensure proper use when using a disinfectant to kill bacteria in your home. Using the product as intended will improve results.
Most household cleaners are meant to be used before the surface has been disinfected. Most people don’t know this. Make sure that when using the disinfectant that you leave the product on the surface for the recommended time. Once it is time to remove the product, wipe down the area with a wet cloth to remove any additional residue. This is especially important when you are cleaning areas in the kitchen and other eating surfaces.
Focus on Key Areas for a Clean House
Certain areas are more prone to germs than others. You’ll need to pay extra attention to these “hot spots”:
- Cellphone and tablets
- Bathroom surfaces (floors, toilets, sinks, faucets)
- Remote controls
- Tables
- Computer keyboards and touchpads
- Sheets, towels, blankets and pillowcases
